... I don't know. Sometimes I wonder if old directors are like old rockers: they just don't have it in them anymore; that fire and drive of youth is gone, and all that's left is autodrive to oblivion.

There, that's a cheery thought to end the day with. :-P

so why has cronenberg not gone down the pan then....? carpenter hasnt made a realy good film since 83!!!

... the difference is that Cronenburg is quite happy to make films outside of the mainstream, and has the luxury, I believe, of some state funding (correct me if I'm wrong). Carpenter, on the other hand, has chosen (or has no other option) than to make films that will appeal to the mainstream. However, last I heard Carpenter was talking about returning to his roots: low budget horror. Perhaps then we might see some of that old sparkle again.

I also loved it, though I'm not a Carpenter fan in any way so I guess my expectations were probably lower than many people's. However as for SCRAPBOOK - I went to some trouble to pick up a copy of this (not easy to obtain in the UK) after reading some of your comments, and thought it was shite. You win some, you lose some I guess
