Well, I've watched it at last; and I must say, I was disappointed. For me, it was spoilt by all the ridiculous, over-the-top, slapstick comedy routines. As in so many of these kind of movies. EVERY TIME! Why do they do it?

Which leads me to wonder: Are there ANY that are made without the silly 'comedy'? (It's not even remotely funny. - Just annoying!)

I can't remember ever watching a kung-fu film, either, that was not ruined by the silly knockabout comedy. If anyone can think of any of this kind of movie that has not got the so-called 'comedy', I would like to hear about it.

it's part of the hong kong way of making films -they make them for their market, you're just a bonus. having said that there are plenty of non humorous hong kong films out there -some are very grim.

erm... off the top of my head, daughter of darkness, red to kill, ebola syndrome, horrible high heels (a film which expects us to believe hong kong police have a squad dedicated to tracking down sellers of shoes made from human skin)

there's loads more -some will have a bit of humour to them without being comedies per se. eg bunman - the police play a joke on their female colleague by making her pick up a severed breast from the beach, later on it falls off a shelf onto her head (ho ho!)

Tsui Hark's masterful DANGEROUS ENCOUNTERS OF THE FIRST KIND (aka DON'T PLAY WITH FIRE) - the most nihilistic, non-humorous, utterly amazing HK film ever made. I'm also a big fan of ROBOTRIX, a fairly grim film though it does have its fair share of goofy 'humour' (I can forgive it here more than I usually do in HK films due to most of it being centred around the lovely form of Amy Yip).

LOL ! Now I don't mind that kind of humor. It's the really silly stuff I object to; I don't mind if it's a trifle 'dark'.
